This short tutorial teaches a method to create a golf putting green using 3ds Max 8 and up.

1. Create a plane centered at 0,0,0, 100 x 100 and with length and width segments 20 x 20.

2. Apply the noise modifier to the plane and give the Z Strength a value of 20. Collapse the plane to editable mesh.

3. Draw a line type spline in the top view over the plane. This is the shape of the green. Adjust the spline vertices until you get the shape you want. Make sure the spline is closed. Set the interpolation value to 8.

4. Apply the Extrude modifier to the spline and give the amount of 25. Collapse the object to editable Mesh.

5. Create a clone - copy of the mesh and set its position above the original mesh.

6. Select all polygons that make up the sides of the shape. Ensure top and bottom polygons are not selected.

7. Apply the Face Extrude modifier to the selected polygons. Use an amount of 5. Collapse to editable mesh. Move both meshes down so that the plane intersects both of them.

8. Select the plane mesh then select ProBoolean from the Compound Objects panel.

9. Check the imprint parameter of the ProBoolean then press the Start Picking button. Select the larger cloned and extruded mesh. Then select the smaller mesh. Stop picking by pressing the Start Picking button again. We now have the imprint of the green on the plane.

10. Collapse the plane to editable poly.

11. Select all polygons on the green. Even the tiny little ones that are now just a fraction of a triangle. Zoom in and you'll see better. Set the material Id to 2.

12. Extrude the selected polygons -0.01 from the Edit Polygons / Extrude panel.

13. Unselect the outer ring of polygons so only the inner green polys are selected. Set the material Id to 3.

14. Extrude the selected polygons -0.01 from the Edit Polygons / Extrude panel.

15. You can now create a Multi/Sub-Object material and apply sub materials to each section of the green. Add a background and some golf props and you've got a basic golf green.
